Make mini ‘pumpkin
These fruits may not be pumpkins, but they are perfect for creating mini pumpkin designs with POSCA markers. Grab a bag of small satsumas, tangerines, or mandarins and let your creativity flow. Keep it simple with black POSCAs by drawing easy faces and illustrations. To create a spider’s web design, draw lines extending from the top of the fruit and connect them with curves using your POSCA marker. Feel free to use these designs on actual pumpkins as well by enlarging them.
Take cues from Mexico
Day of the dead, also known as ‘Día de los Muertos’, is a vibrant celebration that honors both life and death. Originating in Mexico, this holiday is now observed throughout Latin America with intricate calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons). The festivities take place on the 1st and 2nd of November, serving as a colorful and joyful tribute to deceased loved ones.
The elaborate skull designs draw inspiration from La Calavera Catrina, a famous etching created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada between 1910 and 1913. Originally a satirical portrayal of an upper-class woman during the Porfiriato era, La Catrina has since become an iconic figure of the Day of the Dead celebrations. These Catrinas often feature a ‘sugar skull’ design, blending the beauty of life with the symbolism of a skull. Adorned with intricate details and vibrant colors, these skull illustrations prominently showcase flowers as well.
Be inspired by artists
We enjoy drawing inspiration from artists, particularly when it comes to our no-carve pumpkin ideas using POSCA. We decided to experiment with Matisse-inspired cut-out designs on a pumpkin.
We think this bright shapes really pop on a dark background. We used our POSCA MOP’R to cover the pumpkin with black colour and left it to dry. Then we got a range of 5M POSCAs to create our cut-out shapes.
We drew inspiration from Yayoi Kusama and her pumpkin motifs. Utilizing the circular shapes achievable with POSCA MOP’R and POSCA 7M tips, we skillfully crafted our own circles. While we aimed to honor the renowned artist, we made sure to infuse our design with a touch of originality.
